Many cities require their residents to obtain a yard sale permit before having their yard sales. In many cases, there is a fee for obtaining this permit. What could be the reason? We live in a free country after all!
The permit requirement can help police enforce a town ordinance limiting to certain number of yard sales, for example four, that one household can have in a given year.
Yard sales have long been a hot topic in many cities. It is said that some towns neighborhoods are overwhelmed with yard sales that are run more like businesses than a way to get rid of clutter.
Tell us what you think about getting a permit for your yard sale.

I don't think it should be required to get a yard sale permit, it's just another intrusion to a tradition. It ruins the fun of it...Just another way to tax and get money by the officials. We already pay city and state taxes. why pay more..

Perhaps there should be a minimal fee for yard sales, as many yard sale folks don't bother to obey the ordinances set up by their cities. They place their signs on city structures such as light/electric poles, etc, which can cause problems for the city, then those same yard sale folks don't bother to pick up their signs afterwards.
The fee would help fray the cost of a city engineer to have to go around checking to be sure no one is actually running a business through a yard sale and pick up their signs afterwards. We have to work as stewards of the earth to keep it clean and minimize problems for others.
I think a fee is a good thing. Then people will be forced to read the ordinances and abide by them.
